If you’re a woman over 50, and you feel constantly exhausted, drained, and you’re wondering, “Why am I so tired all the time?”

If you nodded along, your thyroid might be trying to get your attention.

As a functional health coach and practitioner who specializes in helping women overcome menopause-related fatigue, I see firsthand how frequently thyroid issues – especially hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis – contribute to chronic exhaustion in midlife.

Yet these conditions often remain hidden and undiagnosed.

I understand this deeply because it’s my own story too.

My Personal Thyroid Journey

Afew years ago, I was struggling with severe fatigue.

Despite sleeping well, eating healthily, exercising consistently, and trying various supplements, I was still exhausted every day.

Visits to my doctor only left me frustrated when I heard those familiar words: “Your thyroid labs are normal.” Yet, something didn’t feel right.

It wasn’t until I did advanced functional testing that I finally discovered I had hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune form of hypothyroidism.

Suddenly, my persistent fatigue, brain fog, and stubborn weight gain made sense.

Getting that clarity allowed me to reclaim my health and energy once and for all.

If you’re over 50 and struggling with unexplained fatigue, your thyroid could be your missing piece, too.

Why Thyroid Issues Spike in Women Over 50

Thyroid dysfunction, especially hypothyroidism, is surprisingly common among women in midlife.

Approximately 1 in 8 women will experience a thyroid issue in their lifetime, with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, the autoimmune form of hypothyroidism, being particularly prevalent in women during menopause.

Menopause itself involves significant hormonal shifts, particularly declining estrogen and progesterone, which influence thyroid function, metabolism, sleep quality, and energy levels.

Yet, despite these clear connections, thyroid health is often overlooked.

Why Standard Thyroid Tests Miss the Mark

Most doctors typically run only one test, Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), to evaluate thyroid function.

But relying solely on TSH misses key insights about your thyroid health.

Comprehensive thyroid testing is crucial and should include:

  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)
  • Free T4 (Thyroxine)
  • Free T3 (Triiodothyronine)
  • Reverse T3 (RT3)
  • Thyroid antibodies (TPO & TgAb) to assess autoimmune involvement (Hashimoto’s)

If you’ve only ever had a TSH test done, chances are you’re not getting the full picture.

What Can You Do If You Suspect a Thyroid Issue?

If you’re dealing with ongoing fatigue and suspect your thyroid might be involved, here are steps you can start taking today:

1. Request Comprehensive Thyroid Testing

Talk to your healthcare provider about running a complete thyroid panel (as listed above).

Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. Your health depends on it.

2. Support Your Thyroid Naturally

You can support your thyroid health through dietary and lifestyle changes, such as:

  • Eating nutrient-rich foods: Selenium (Brazil nuts, seafood), zinc, iodine (seaweed, seafood), iron, and magnesium all nourish the thyroid.
  • Reducing inflammatory foods: Gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, and processed foods can contribute to inflammation, worsening thyroid function.
  • Balancing blood sugar: Starting your day with protein, healthy fats, and fiber keeps your blood sugar stable and supports thyroid health.
  • Managing stress effectively: Chronic stress disrupts thyroid hormones—practices like yoga, meditation, deep breathing, or daily walks can help restore balance.

3. Work with a Knowledgeable Practitioner

If testing confirms low thyroid function or Hashimoto’s, discuss treatment options with your doctor, including thyroid hormone medications if necessary.

Working alongside a functional health practitioner or integrative doctor who understands thyroid care can significantly enhance your results.
